Description

Checks disks for errors and fixes any problems.

Command Syntax

SCANDISK [drive: [drive: ...]|/ALL] [/CHECKONLY | /AUTOFIX [/NOSAVE] | [/CUSTOM] [/SURFACE] [/MONO] [/NOSUMMARY]

/ALL checks all the drives specified.
/CHECKONLY does not fix any errors.
/AUTOFIX automatically fixes errors.
/NOSAVE does not create an undo disk.
/CUSTOM runs SCANDISK according to the settings in the [custom] section of the SCANDISK.INI file.
/SURFACE checks the surface of the disk for errors.
/MONO only displays in black and white.
/NOSUMMARY does not display the summary of what was checked when SCANDISK has finished.

To check an unmounted compressed volume file for errors, use the following syntax:

SCANDISK volume-name [/CHECKONLY | /AUTOFIX [/NOSAVE] | /CUSTOM] [/MONO] [/NOSUMMARY]

To check a file or files for fragmentation, use the following syntax:

SCANDISK /FRAGMENT [drive:][path]filename

To undo repairs you made previously, use the following syntax:

SCANDISK /UNDO [undo-drive:] [/MONO]

Comments

SCANDISK is preferred over CHKDSK as it can fix a greater number of errors and has the option to undo any changes made.
